Toponimia alternativa nas guías do Camiño de Santiago: pegadas na paisaxe e tradicións peregrinais

This study focuses on those place names of the Way of St. James (French Way or Via Francigena) that received a special treatment by pilgrims, that is to say, that were named in a different way from the one recorded in local documents. Sometimes, these alternative names were perpetuated over the centuries, recorded in travel accounts and pilgrims’ guides written at different times by people of different origins, giving the impression of the existence of onomastic traditions that arose in pilgrim environments and were unique to them. On occasions, these traditions transcended and even left their mark on the toponymic landscape itself.
