Topónimos e o estudo histórico da paisaxe ó redor dos camiños de Santiago en terras galegas
In this presentation we will try to reflect on the potential – and the limitations – of toponymy as a source for the knowledge of the history of the Galician territory. In order to do so, we must start from two methodological needs. On the one hand, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, and on the other, the need to combine the etymological and semantic analysis of toponyms with the study of their spatial dimension, mapped on a map, conceived as systems, and addressing the relationship they present with the other elements of the landscape in which they are inserted. From this perspective, we will present several case studies of the historical information contained in various place names located around the roads to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

José Carlos Sánchez Pardo is a lecturer in the area of Archaeology at the University of Santiago de Compostela. In his research career he has focused on the study of medieval landscapes in Galicia through the combination of textual, archaeological and toponymic sources.
