Toponimia del Camino de Santiago
en Vasconia

This work is a study of the names of the localities along the Way of St James in Lower Navarre (French Basque Country), in Navarre and in the Basque Autonomous Community, a route currently called Donejakue bidea and formerly Erromesbidea, literally ‘the way of the pilgrims’, ‘the way of the pilgrims’. Special attention is drawn to the duality of forms (one Basque and the other Romance) that some of the toponyms along the route have: Luzaide / Valcarlos, Auritz / Burguete, Puente la Reina / Gares, etc. This duality of forms is due to the pilgrims on their way to Santiago and also to the “Frankish” populations that settled along the route with the approval of the kings of Navarre.
