O papel da toponimia na reconstrución das paisaxes históricas: exemplos arredor do Camín Francés na Asturias occidental

The potential of toponymy in the investigation of historical landscapes is shown through several case studies from western Asturias. For this purpose, examples are chosen in which this source plays a key role in the construction of interpretations within a horizontal dialogue with other sources: archaeological, documentary, cartographic… Finally, the need for a collection of popular toponymy of oral tradition that follows a series of requirements to guarantee its usefulness in archaeological and historical research is argued.

Andrés Menéndez. PhD in Humanistic Research at the University of Uvieo (2019). He is currently working at the Universitá di Genova with a Margarita Salas postdoctoral contract from the Universidá d’Uvieo (2022-2024). He is specialised in the study of mountain areas from the perspective of Landscape Archaeology, giving in his work a relevant role to popular toponymy as a source for historical research. 

Fernando Álvarez-Balbuena García. Linguist and lecturer in the Department of Classical and Romance Philology at the University of Oviedo. He was a member of the Xunta Asesora de Toponimia do Principiado de Asturias (2004-2013) and belonged to the editorial board of the Revista de Filoloxía Asturiana (2001-2017). He is currently a member of the research group Seminariu de Filoloxía Asturiana at the University of Oviedo. His research interests are historical Romance linguistics, dialectology, geolinguistics and toponymy.
